The relay — is the electronic operated switch which usually carries out the following functions:
– switches big currents distantly from a chain in which this current flows, allowing to use thinner wires and contacts of switches in the main chain;
– unlike the mechanical switch having one operating entrance, can carry out switching on several operating entrances;
– the timer and by that sets an interval of work of screen wipers.
If the electric chain operated by the relay, fails, and a cause of defect, probably, the relay is, listen to operation of the relay at the included system. If the relay regularly works, you should hear click at its inclusion. If the relay is serviceable, the cause of defect is concluded in elements or connecting wires. If the relay does not work, it means that it does not receive the main power supply or an operating impulse, or the relay is faulty.

The majority of the relay is established in the block of safety locks and the relay in a motor compartment (see
the Fig. 5.8
).

Some specialized relays are located separately or in separate blocks under the dashboard and in a motor compartment
(fig. 15.10)

On cars four types of the relay are used: with constantly closed or opened contacts and being switched contacts
(fig. 15.11, 15.12)
. The electric circuit of the relay is given in cases of some relays with numbers of contacts.

Fig. 15.13. The scheme of check of the relay with constantly opened contacts
|
For check of the relay connect an ohmmeter to its contacts, thus the ohmmeter should show a rupture of a chain
(fig. 15.13)
. Then one additional wire connect contact of a winding of the relay to "weight", and the second additional wire connect the second contact of a winding of the relay to the positive plug of the accumulator, at this relay should join to (click) and the ohmmeter should show short circuit (resistance of 0 Ohm). Otherwise the relay is faulty and it is necessary to replace it.
